Modern art and its roots in perversion
I believe it was Donald Kuspit's piece on perversion in art which first brought the relation of modern art with a somewhat twisted eroticism to my attention, celebrated in numerous paintings depicting prostitutes. Most of these works are in the cult of ugliness category, despite of their sympathy and compassion for the oldest profession in the world.
One of the more enticing examples of prostitutes in art is Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's La Visite médicale (ca 1894). The second lady in row is particularly attractive, with her lifted skirt.
