I travelled from Kunming to Jinghong in 1989, back when Jinghong was just a village.

In 1989, China had still much of the communist iron rice bowl mentality. Today, Chinese capitalism appears more capitalist than Europe's. Chinese communism is in fact just an excuse for Chinese police state and totalitarianism. The air pollution in China is horrendous. The Censorship in China is annoying. The death penalty in China is the largest practise of its kind in absolute numbers worldwide.
