The Emergency Rescue Committee was a European anti-Nazi movement organized by Varian Fry following the occupation of France to help persons wishing to flee the Nazis.
In 1941 Breton, Kurt Seligmann, Yves Tanguy, Max Ernst, Wilfredo Lam, Claude Lévi-Strauss, André Masson and Victor Serge leave France for New York.
Additional persons rescued were the political scientist Hannah Arendt, the painter Marc Chagall, the novelist Franz Werfel, the philosopher Alfredo Mendizabal, the medical scientist Fritz Kahn, the sculptor Jacques Lipschitz, the historian Golo Mann, the Nobel Prize winning biochemist Otto Meyerhoff.
Joining the rescue operation was a young Czech refugee, Charles Sternberg and Aristede Maillol.
