The Victoria and Albert Museum (often abbreviated as the V&A) is a London museum specialising in applied and decorative arts. Objects on display cover all periods and styles: from Medieval and Renaissance to Baroque and Rococo; 18th century including Neoclassicism; 19th century including, Empire Style, Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau; 20th century including, Art Deco and Modernism.
The museum was established in 1852 with profits from The Great Exhibition. This exhibition had revealed that, though Britain was the leading industrial nation, the quality of its manufactured goods had begun to lag behind the best products from continental Europe. The museum was, in part, formed to raise the standards of education and design within the manufacturing sector.
