"Notre héritage n'est précédé d'aucun testament" is a dictum by René Char, first published in Feuillets d'Hypnos (1946). It is often translated in English as “Our heritage is not preceded by any testament”. Hannah Arendt, who places it at the beginning of her foreword to The Gap between Past and Future, translates it as "our inheritance was left to us by no testament."
