Matriarchy is a term, which is applied to gynocentric form of society, in which leading role is with the female and especially with the mothers of a community. Some authors consider it as "hypothetical". There exist many matriarchal animal societies including bees, elephants, and killer whales. The word matriarchy is coined as the opposite of Patriarchy. When related to humans, the term literally meaning "wife's rule", gynecocracy is sometimes used synonymously.
