Career
Il fonde en 1960 la revue Brèches, arts et lettres tout en collaborant à divers journaux proches du Parti Communiste comme l'Humanité, Les Lettres françaises et France-Nouvelle. En 1965, il fait la rencontre de Philippe Sollers, dont il défendait les livres dans ses chroniques, et commence à publier dans la collection Tel Quel. En 1971, il entre dans le comité de direction de la revue Art Press dans laquelle il sera responsable des pages littéraires. Il est par ailleurs le compagnon de Catherine Millet.

In February 1994 the novel Adorations perpétuelles (Perpetual Adorations) by Jacques Henric, reproduced L’Origine du monde on its cover. Police visited several French bookshops to have them withdraw the book from their windows.
