"Het boek" is a short story by Tom Lanoye.
The opening sentence of the story is "Achille van den Branden, though not even fifty, has read every book in the world."
Achille van den Branden, the story learns us, is a child prodigy who reads so fast (one book in 10 seconds) that by the time he is 50 he has indeed read every book in the world.
He becomes a circus freak and protégé of academics. Then from a small village comes the rumor that there is one book that he hasn't heard of nor read. The book is the story of his life that we had begun to read on page 55 and that from page 79 is reprinted in smaller type. He finds out that there only a couple of blank pages are left, meaning that his end is near.
