"Avec la souillure nous entrons au règne de la terreur" (With defilement we enter into the reign of terror) is a dictum by Paul Ricœur recorded in The Symbolism of Evil.
A more complete fragment reads:
- "La souillure elle-même est à peine une représentation et celle-ci est noyée dans une peur spécifique qui bouche la réflexion; avec la souillure, nous entrons au règne de la Terreur; le philosophe se souvient alors du nec spe nec metu, de Spinoza : ne rien espérer pour ne rien craindre; il apprend du psychanalyste la parenté de cette peur avec la névrose obsessionnelle."
It is cited Mary Douglas' in Purity and Danger (1960). It is also the epigraph in Christian Enzensberger's Smut: An Anatomy of Dirt (1970).
