Dame Jean Iris Murdoch (July 15, 1919 – February 8, 1999) was a Dublin-born writer and philosopher, best known for her novels, which combine rich characterization and compelling plotlines, usually involving ethical or sexual themes. Her first Under the Net was selected as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century and several of her novels were listed in 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. Many of Murdoch's twenty-six novels present the horrors of modern egomania.
