Blockbuster, as applied to film or theater, denotes a very popular and/or successful production. The term was originally derived from theater slang referring to a particularly successful play but is now used primarily by the film industry. A pivotal moment in films was the 1975 release of Steven Spielberg's first major hit, Jaws, widely regarded as the birth of the blockbuster motion picture.
