Wilbert Das is a Dutch fashion designer.
Biography
Early career
Wilbert Das was born December 2, 1963. He grew up studying and working on his family’s dairy farm in a small village in the south of Holland before departing at the age of 19 to study fashion design at the highly-revered Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem, a school which has produced many noted international designers such as Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren (Viktor & Rolf) and Marcel Wanders. Upon completing his degree in 1988 Wilbert drove to Italy for an interview with Italian clothing company Diesel. Company founder Renzo Rosso offered him a job on the spot and literally had Wilbert working that same afternoon. Thus started one of fashion’s longest-running and most successful collaborations.
Later career
Wilbert began with Diesel as assistant designer on the Male, Accessories, Leather and Kids lines, but soon was directing the entire Diesel style office. In 1993 Wilbert was recognized with his current title of Diesel Creative Director, a role in which he oversees all aspects of Diesel’s global image, his responsibilities ranging from directing all clothing & accessory design as well as direction of all publicity campaigns, including all forms of communications, events, fashion shows, etc.. Wilbert also guides retail & interior design, including stores, showrooms, special projects such as the Pelican Hotel in Miami, as well as merchandising, packaging, and visual display. Wilbert’s quiet approach to his work has helped in lending Diesel a harmonious creative culture, one which is very unique in the industry. Despite leading a life full of constant research travel & international collaborations, Wilbert makes time every year to participate in events such as International Talent Support (ITS), in which he is a founding jury member, Diesel Wall project, and other programs which support young, unproven talents.
