Luchino Visconti di Modrone, Duke of Modrone (November 2, 1906 - March 17, 1976) was an Italian theatre and cinema director and writer, noted for films such as The Leopard (1963), The Damned (1969) and Death in Venice (1971). He died in Rome of a stroke while filming Ludwig at the age of 69. Thematically his works -- often based on novels -- involved infidelity and betrayal, aristocracy and decadence, historicism as well as neorealism.
