Jan Mabuse

Jan Mabuse

Jan Mabuse (c. 1478 – October 1, 1532), the name adopted (from his birthplace, Maubeuge) by the Flemish painter Jan Gossaert, or Jennyn van Hennegouwe (Hainaut), as he called himself when he matriculated in the guild of St Luke, at Antwerp, in 1503. He is known for such paintings as Neptune and Amphitrite, Danae and Venus and Amor[1].


Bartholomaeus Spranger

Bartholomeus (Bartholomaeus) Spranger (March 21 1546June 27 1611) was a Flemish Mannerist painter, draughtsman, and etcher. He was born in Antwerp.

Hendrik Goltzius made engravings of his paintings, thus increasing Spranger's fame. Spranger's Mannerist paintings depict nudes in various complex poses.

Examples include Salmacis and Hermaphroditus (c. 1585)

Rembrandt

Rembrandt's etchings include Ledikant, but also Woman Under A Tree[2], 1631, The Monk in the Cornfield, 1644-1648 [3], Jupiter and Antiope, Joseph and Potiphar's Wife[4]. These rare erotic or ribald compositions have no equivalent in his paintings.
