Vanitas (Goya's Skull) (1849) is a painting by Dionisio Fierros.

"Where is the skull of Goya? There have been many rumors, many conjectures. Gomez de la Serna has discussed the possibility that the followers of Gall or Spurzheim had it, or that it was taken by some youth of the romantic movement. He recalled that a dozen years ago a painting appeared in Zaragoza. It was supposed to have been signed by Dionisio Fierros in 1849, and to bear on the back this inscription in the handwriting of the Marques de San Adrian: "Skull of Goya, painted by Fierros." And yet that seems only to confuse the mystery. How could we know that Fierro had seen the skull of Goya? Once it was known that the skull had been taken from the tomb in Bordeaux the painting could easily be made. Who knew about it? Where was the painting between 1849 and 1928?" --Charles Poore - 1938
