Enige jaren geleden nam ik me voor alle psychologische romans van Simenon te lezen. In het Frans noemen ze die de 'romans durs'. Ik las er onlangs nog twee, 'Het bloedspoor in de sneeuw,' een van de weinigen die me tegenvielen, en 'De neger' die ik erg goed vond. Als je die romannetjes leest dan krijg je vaak het gevoel dat je nieuwe mensen hebt leren kennen. Dan zit je op de fiets en dan vraag je je af, hoe zou het nog met die of die zijn, en dan kom je plots tot de vaststelling dat 'die' eigenlijk niet bestaat, dat 'die' een personage is. Zo echt zijn die personages van Simenon.
In het Nederlands werden die romannetjes van Simenon uitgegeven door Dick Bruna, in de serie 'Zwarte Beertjes.' Je koopt die tweedehands voor twee à drie euro. Als het al zo veel is. Ze zijn erg mooi vormgegeven. Een van de mooiste is 'De verhuis.'
Vandaag of gisteren stierf nog een schrijver die vertaald in het Nederlands bij het huis van Bruna uitgegeven werd. Haar naam was Maj Sjöwall. Ze werd 84 en ze was samen met haar partner (die al in 1975 overleed) de auteur van een tiental Zweedse politieromans. Ik las geen enkele. Ik ga dat ook niet doen. Geen tijd. Een mens moet keuzes maken. Het paar wordt ook de geestelijke vader genoemd van 'Nordic noir', vandaag vooral gekend voor een aantal misdaadtelevisieseries en films die spannend en maatschappijkritisch zouden zijn. Ik ga die ook niet bekijken.
Ik maak van de dood van Sjöwall wel graag gebruik om die pockets van Bruna te pluggen. Het hier afgebeelde 'De man die even wilde afrekenen' was getiteld in het Zweeds 'Polis, polis, potatismos!' en in het Engels 'Murder at the Savoy'. Dan hebben de Zweden en wij wel de beste titel. Ook de andere negen romans van het Zweedse paar kwamen bij Bruna uit, maar kregen niet die mooie covers die het huis zo kenmerken. Dat is jammer natuurlijk. Er zijn heel wat mensen die die Bruna pockets verzamelen en niet lezen. Ik niet. Ik hou ze niet bij. Ik probeer ze uit te delen eens ik ze uit heb.
Door de huidige omstandigheden is mijn voorraad bijna op.
Mijn god, ik mis de boekenwinkels.
Gisteren Chantal Le Grelle voor het eerst ontmoet op de hoek van de Olmenlaan en de Sorbenlaan op weg naar Velo Antwerpen station 277 Ahornen.
Ik heb haar Simenon 'De medeplichtigen' getoond en ze wilde het ondanks corona aanraken. Achteraf heb ik het ontsmet. De vertaling is van K. H. Romijn.
"Ik kan niet ... Neem me niet kwalijk ..."
Wat dit personage niet kan, leest u op pagina 155 van 'De medeplichtigen' (1956) van Simenon.
Het zoveelste van zijn psychologische romans die ik uitlas. Er zijn er 117 dus ik heb nog wel wat te gaan ... ik lees ze liefst in het Nederlands maar volgens mij zijn ze niet allemaal naar het Nederlands vertaald.
In Maatstaf schreef Simon Vestdijk over deze roman: "handtastelijkheden te buiten ging tegenover zijn secretaresse." Dat staat op de achterflap van deze roman. En zo kom ik te weten dat Vestdijk in 1967 een heel essay over deze meesterschrijver publiceerde in 'Maatstaf', "Simenon en de realiteit".
Bovendien verwijst hij daarin naar Pierre Dubois, die in zijn Een houding in de tijd (1950) ook een stuk over Simenon schreef.
Mijn oordeel?
Deze Simenon was top, het verhaal van een man die al autorijdend met zijn secretaresse zit te seksen ... door zijn toedoen crasht een bus met schoolkinderen die allemaal levend verbranden.
Hij pleegt vluchtmisdrijf en toont weinig wroeging maar veel ongemak.
Het verhaal is in de lijn van 'De blauwe kamer', mijn allerfavorietste Simenon-'psycho', het seksuele is er even belangrijk.
Net zoals in de vorige die ik las, 'De Neger' is er veel alcohol die toch niet belet "helder te denken". "Integendeel". Ha!
Het loopt uiteraard allemaal slecht af.
Het hoofdpersonage is antipathiek. Ik heb dat graag. W. F. Hermans schreef in 1960 een stuk over antipathieke romanpersonages. Je kan dat stuk vinden in 'Het sadistische universum' (1964).

RIP Little "A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop-a-wop-bam-boom!" Richard (1932 – 2020)
Little Richard was an American composer and singer best-known for shouting "A-wop-bop-a-loo-bop-a-wop-bam-boom!" at the beginning of the song "Tutti Frutti" (1955).
Without Little Richard, no Prince.
And no "Be-Bop-A-Lula", "Diddy Wah Diddy", "Da Doo Ron Ron" and " Do Wah Diddy Diddy".
But without "Ta-ra-ra Boom-de-ay", no Little Richard.
The boom comes first.

Sweet Pea Atkinson was an American singer best known for his vocal contributions to the releases of the band Was (Not Was).
His solo singles includes "Dance or Die" (1982) which was played at the Paradise Garage.
RIP Florian 'Kraftwerk' Schneider (1947 - 2020)
Florian Schneider was a German musician, known for his work with Kraftwerk.
Of interest to my book is the connection of Kraftwerk to Afro-American music as noted in "Planet Rock".
Jon Savage noted in his piece "Machine Soul: A History Of Techno" (1993) that:
- "In 1981, Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force, together with producer Arthur Baker, paid tribute [to Kraftwerk with] "Planet Rock," which used the melody from "Trans-Europe Express" over the rhythm from "Numbers." In the process they created electro and moved rap out of the Sugarhill age."
Simon Reynolds in Energy Flash (1998) similarly remarked:
"In New York, the German band almost single-handedly sired the electro movement: Afrika Bambaataa and Soulsonic Force's 1982 smash "Planet Rock" stole its doomy melody from "Trans-Europe Express" and its beatbox rhythm from Kraftwerk's 1981 track "Numbers.""--Generation Ecstasy (1998) by Simon Reynolds
Apparently, none of Kraftwerk's material was actually sampled, all was emulated.

Michael McClure was an American poet and writer known for his association with the Beat Generation.

En in Duitsland overleed Kraftwerk mede-oprichter Florian Schneider (1947 - 2020). Kraftwerk staat uiteraard in mijn canon. Maar goed, het is een vrij anonieme band. Geen cult of personality. Dus ik kende Florian niet echt. Alleen van naam. Dus vandaag vind ik een heel geestige muzikale compositie van Florians hand: "Stop Plastic Pollution" (2015). Florian was een groene jongen. Blijkbaar hielp de Belgische cultheld Dan Lacksman hem hiermee. En ook Uwe Schmidt (Atom Heart).
Terug naar Kraftwerk. Om een of andere reden is mijn favoriete nummer "Neon Lights" (1978).
Voorts is het bij Kraftwerk altijd goed te vermelden hoe groot hun invloed op de Afro-Amerikaanse muziek scene van de vroege jaren 80 wel niet geweest is. Een nummer zoals "Planet Rock" (1981) van Afrika Bambaataa gebruikte de melodie van "Trans-Europe Express" (1977) en het ritme van "Numbers" (1981) en vonden zo de electro uit. En plots was het gedaan met de Sugarhill rap. Het zijn dit soort kruisbestuivingen die muziek levendig houden. Down with the purists ... maar ook ... lang leve de innovators. En dat was Florian zeker.
RIP Millie "My Boy Lollipop" Small (1947 – 2020)
Millie Small was the singer of "My Boy Lollipop" (1964), her only hit.
She was the first Jamaican artist to break through to an international audience.
Reggae's invasion into the mainstream continued that year in the United Kingdom with songs such as "Al Capone" and "Guns of Navarone" (1964).
But in America, the wait was for 1969 with "The Israelites" (1968) to give reggae international repute and recognition, as "My Boy Lollipop" was thought of as a novelty record rather than a reggae song.

RIP Dave Greenfield (1949 – 2020)
David Greenfield was an English musician, known as the keyboard player in The Stranglers.
Everyone is familiar with the song "Golden Brown" (1982) but few are aware that is actually a waltz.
Next to "Golden Brown", The Stranglers wrote a couple of enduring compositions. "Peaches" (1977), a sleazy track which features the word clitoris and for that reason had to be re-recorded in order for the BBC would play it.
I cannot find any satisfaction in listening to "No More Heroes" (1977). The refrain has a childish quality that I find hard to swallow. "Always the Sun" (1986) however, works for me. It has that dreaminess also present in "Midsummer Night Dream" (1983) and of course in "Golden Brown".
En then there is "Nice 'n' Sleazy" (1978), a track which is also danceable. It's on YouTube in a Top of the Pops live version and if you wait until 1:29 you see the keyboard solo of Greenfield.
That track is also on the marvelous compilation How to Kill the DJ Part 2 (2004) out on Tigersushi Records.

Die twee stoere binken zaten bij @Gary Vervoort op de schoolbanken maar spelen nu American football voor "The Bristol Academy PRIDE", een universiteitsploeg in Bristol.
Marcelo en Bilal spelen niet alleen.
Ze studeren er ook sportjournalistiek bij.
Vroeger speelde het tweetal hier in Antwerpen voor de Antwerp Argonauts.
Marcelo vertrekt binnenkort naar de Verenigde Staten, naar de Papago Pumas in Arizona, Bilal is nog in onderhandeling.
Ze hadden nooit durven hopen dat het zo snel zou gaan.

Ik herinner het me nog heel goed ... Duchâtelet die op televisie Vivant voorstelde ... het was de allereerste keer dat politiek me prikkelde.
Zijn idee om belasting op arbeid af te schaffen en alles bij luxegoederen te halen (1.000 euro belasting op een iPhone van 1.000 euro) vond ik perfect logisch. Op die manier betalen de rijken het gelag en wend je de ecocalyps af.
Het verwijt dat hij kreeg is dat het de klassenmaatschappij in de hand werkt. Dat alleen rijke mensen luxegoederen kunnen betalen. So what? Zoals ik zo vaak als boutade zeg ... ik heb geen last op de weg van alle Ferrari's, Lamborghini's en Rolls Royces. Dat zijn er maar heel weinig. Ik heb last van de Fords, de Renaults en de Toyota Corolla's.
So what als in een nabije toekomst alleen heel rijke mensen een auto kunnen kopen. Ik neem de trein wel. De TGV.
Citytrips, een auto, kinderen krijgen zijn geen mensenrecht! Voedsel, rechtszekerheid, onderwijs of gelijkheid van kansen zijn dat wel.
Laat de rijken de crisis betalen. Door luxegoederen 100% procent te taxeren en red de planeet.

It posits capitalism as a given, and cultural Marxism as a conspiracy theory (saying "het doel van het cultuurmarxisme is om zoveel te vervreemden"), whereas the second is just a bijverschijnsel of the first.
It mentions the terms zieligheidsindustrie, race to the bottom, Babah Tarawally, luxury beliefs, slachtofferhiërarchieën.

RIP Tony 'afrobeat' Allen
Tony Allen (1940 – 2020) was a Nigerian musician and drummer.
He was the drummer for Fela Kuti from 1968 to 1979 and was with Fela the creator of afrobeat.
You cannot imagine Fela Kuti nor afrobeat without the drumming of Tony Allen.
Allen left Fela Kuti before Fela's death and he would go on to drum but it would take a while before he found his own way.
This happened with the sublime EP Never Expect Power Always (1984).
Other solo work of note includes Black Voices (1999), Tomorrow Comes The Harvest (2018, with Jeff Mills) and Sounding Lines (2018, with Moritz von Oswald).
Allen is probably best-known for playing drums on "La Ritournelle" (2003) by Sébastien Tellier, an iconic track for the contemporary cosmopolitan class, the international hipster crowd.
The drumming on that track sounds like a "Funky Drummer" sample but it is in reality the live drumming of Tony Allen.
I'd say, if you are new to all this, start by listening to "Shakara (Oloje)" (1972) by Fela Kuti, then switch to Never Expect Power Always (1984) and end with Sounding Lines (2018).

RIP Germano Celant (1940 – 2020)
Germano Celant was an Italian art historian, critic and curator who coined the term "Arte Povera" (poor art) in 1967.
The 'poor' of that epithet referred to the materials.
I've always thought of that movement as a bit of a non-concept exemplary of that 20th century mania of coining names for art movements, think surrealism, dada, popart, post-popart, avant garde, post-avantgarde.

RIP Maj Sjöwall (1935 – 2020)
Maj Sjöwall was a Swedish author known as the co-author of the Martin Beck novels.
She was with her partner Per Wahlöö (1926 – 1975) the mother and father of Nordic noir.
In the words of Henning Mankell

And then I wonder about Ed McBain and social criticism and I google:

Ik haalde het in huis omdat een van zijn critici het volgende bezwaar uitte tegen Rorty: "Zonder waarheid is er geen onrecht."
Ik was vroeger een alles-relativerende postmodernist.
Nu vind ik dat we met dat relativisme helemaal niets opschieten.
Iedereen heeft recht op zijn eigen meningen, maar niet op zijn eigen feiten.
En als alle cultuur relatief is, dan is kannibalisme vast enkel een kwestie van smaak.
Rorty is geniaal omdat hij de literatuur verenigt met de filosofie. U een heel nuttige en erg frisse kijk geeft op Kant, Nietzsche en Freud.
Rorty is onwaarschijnlijk belezen. Het is echt hét boek van dé homo universalis.
In zijn ethiek legt hij teveel de nadruk op wreedheid (Judith N. Shklar, "Putting Cruelty First") en vernedering wat naar mijn gevoel de deur teveel openzet (hier in het Westen althans) voor klaagcultuur en slachtofferschap. Maar ik ben nog maar bij het begin van dat stuk.
Ik zit nu halverwege ... maar lang geleden dat ik nog zoiets fantastisch in mijn handen had.
Ik wil hierover een paper schrijven met als titel "Zonder waarheid geen onrecht" in het kader van een college dat ik volg over vertrouwen.
De mens moet kunnen vertrouwen in de waarheid. De intellectueel mag van mijn part verdrinken in zijn ironie, die intellectueel is sowieso een geval apart. Maar de mens, pak hem dé waarheid niet af.

En als alle cultuur relatief is, dan is kannibalisme vast enkel een kwestie van smaak.
Rorty is geniaal omdat hij de literatuur verenigt met de filosofie. U een heel nuttige en erg frisse kijk geeft op Kant, Nietzsche en Freud.
Rorty is onwaarschijnlijk belezen. Het is echt hét boek van dé homo universalis.
In zijn ethiek legt hij teveel de nadruk op wreedheid (Judith N. Shklar, "Putting Cruelty First") en vernedering wat naar mijn gevoel de deur teveel openzet (hier in het Westen althans) voor klaagcultuur en slachtofferschap. Maar ik ben nog maar bij het begin van dat stuk.
Ik zit nu halverwege ... maar lang geleden dat ik nog zoiets fantastisch in mijn handen had.
Ik wil hierover een paper schrijven met als titel "Zonder waarheid geen onrecht" in het kader van een college dat ik volg over vertrouwen.
De mens moet kunnen vertrouwen in de waarheid. De intellectueel mag van mijn part verdrinken in zijn ironie, die intellectueel is sowieso een geval apart. Maar de mens, pak hem de waarheid niet af.
RIP Bohannon (1942 – 2020)
Hamilton Bohannon was een Amerikaanse muzikant gekend voor de disco hit “Let’s Start the Dance” (1978).
Het zijn vooral zijn instrumentele stukken die een zekere tijdloosheid hebben, een betoverende monotonie. Het ontbreken van violen beviel feestneuzen die wel wilden dansen maar niks hadden met de disco-kitsch die hen te gay was.
Ik geef jullie “Me and the Gang” (1978), de basis van “Get Get Down” (1999) van Paul Johnson die er eigenlijk niet zoveel mee deed maar er toch een hit mee scoorde.
PS. Ook "From: Disco To: Disco" (1996) van het Duitse Whirlpool Productions is gebaseerd op een Bohannon nummer, noteerde ik ooit in mijn dagboek. De bron is "I Remember", de b-kant van "Foot Stompin' Music Part II". Omdat ik die plaat niet meer heb en "I Remember" niet op YouTube staat, kan ik dat nu niet dubbelchecken.

Surplus: Terrorized Into Being Consumers (Surplus: hoe we geterroriseerd worden om consument te zijn) is een Zweedse documentaire uit 2003 over ons leven als consumenten en de globalisering.
De docu werpt een kritische blik op de argumenten die het kapitalisme en technologie ondersteunen.
Maar zijn we echt efficiënter, hebben we echt meer vrije tijd, moeten we echt minder werken? Of worden we enkel gedwongen om consument te zijn? Ik koop, dus ik ben?
De film pleit voor een eenvoudig leven dat toch vol betekenis zit.
Surplus maakt openlijk gebruik van lipsynchronisatie om woorden in de mond te leggen van machtige mensen. Woorden die ze normaal gezien nooit zouden uitspreken. Zo zegt de vroegere president George W. Bush: "Ik wil een eenvoudig en bevredigend leven hebben", en Fidel Castro zegt over Microsoft: "Ik hou van dit bedrijf! Ja!".

De laatste dagen keek ik docu's over ecologie en overconsumptie: 'Planet of the Humans' (2019), 'CBS Reports: The Silent Spring of Rachel Carson' (1963), 'The River', 'Surplus: Terrorized into Being Consumers' (2003), 'The Lightbulb Conspiracy - Planned Obsolescence' (2010) en 'Goodbye Mrs Ant' deel 4 of Pandora's Box (1992).
De meest deprimerende docu is 'Planet of the Humans' (2019), groene energie helpt niet. Integendeel, het versnelt de ecocalyps alleen maar. En dan die orangutans op het einde. Vreselijk.
De meest tot hoop stemmende docu is 'CBS Reports: The Silent Spring of Rachel Carson' (1963), Rachel Carson slaagde erin het gebruik van DDT aan banden te leggen.
De meest praktische docu is 'The Lightbulb Conspiracy - Planned Obsolescence' (2010). Het promoot de reparatiecultuur.
De amusantste is 'Goodbye Mrs Ant' deel 4 of Pandora's Box (1992). Over diezelfde Rachel Carson. Breed in scope zoals altijd bij regisseur Adam Curtis.
De radicaalste en meest tot de verbeelding sprekende docu is 'Surplus: Terrorized into Being Consumers' (2003). In het begin denk je what the fuck ... met een toespraak van Fidel Castro, maar dan wordt het amusant waarbij George Bush 'talking heads'-achtig woorden in de mond gelegd krijgt als "I want to lead a simple and fulfilling life" ... en dan zie je hoe de rantsoeneringscultuur van Cuba ook niet gespaard wordt ... en dan zie je über-belachelijke Steve Ballmer met zijn monkey dance ... dat was in de tijd dat ik nog voor Microsoft werkte, geloof ik ... allemaal zeer subversief met John Zerzan die zegt dat het vernielen van eigendommen een noodzakelijk onderdeel van de strijd is ... die Zerzan ... als hem opzoekt blijkt achteraf een heel redelijk iemand te lijken ... lijken ... de strekking blijkt het anarcho-primitivisme. Boeiend.
Misschien toch eens nuttig dat mensen zoals Jean-Marie Dedecker (als symbool voor mindless liberalisme), Els Ampe (zelfde als Dedecker ... bovendien denigrerend praten over boomknuffelaars), Patrick Loobuyck (die recentelijk in "Nee, het coronavirus is geen beschuldigende vinger naar het kapitalisme" nog ontkende dat kapitalisme iets met corona te maken zou kunnen hebben), Maarten Boudry (technologie zal alles oplossen), Peter De Keyzer ('Groei maakt gelukkig').
Gentenaars, ik heb een vraag. Het gaat over het Gents dialect.
En meer bepaald over het afwijkend gebruik van de betrekkelijke voornaamwoorden 'die' en 'dat'.
Gentenaars zeggen dingen zoals, "het meisje die" en "het voorstel die".
Zit daar een zekere logica achter? Gebruiken jullie nooit het betrekkelijk vnw 'dat'?
Met andere woorden, is er een grammaticald regel of is het willekeur?
Het kan geen willekeur zijn.
Dus wat is de regel?
Jammer genoeg laten jullie deze bespreking aan Jan Jacobs, de man die reeds lang zijn reputatie als ecologie-commentator verbrandde met stukken zoals "Onze planeet redden doe je met een plastic zak" en "Plastic soup is een mythe".

I've always had a fascination with free jazz which veers from awe to disbelief to a mild form of even scorn.
It's as if free jazz is the locus of strife between my need for entertainment and intellectualism. This love–hate relationship which appears to be my variety of the wild orchids and Trotsky).
But jazz itself was also that locus of strife.
Because it was somewhere in the 1940s that jazz begot bebop, and the road that has been jazz permanently forked.
One side continued its entertainment course.
Another side explored the realm of high art.
So as jazz became less popular, it became more highbrow. Filling this entertainment void was rock and roll and R&B, I guess.

This happened two years ago but I also found out today.
Also, I had never heard of Joe Frank.
Today, googled for Ken Nordine and ASMR and I found Joe Frank
He is an absolute genius.
Up there in absurdity with the likes of Roland Topor.
Joe Frank was a French-born American writer radio performer known for his philosophical, humorous, surrealist, and absurd monologues and radio dramas.
Typical episodes include "Bad Karma" (2000) and "That Night" (1994).
"Bad Karma"[4] opens with:
- "I'm sitting at a dinner party attended by Pol Pot, Hitler, Stalin and Mao. Seated at another smaller table are Saddam Hussein, Slobodan Milošević, Pinochet and some others I don't recognize. And then there's a third table, sort of a children's table, it has shorter legs and smaller children's chairs. And sitting there are Richard Speck, Gary Gilmore, Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy and Charles Manson."

I did not enjoy reading The Snow Was Dirty. It was one of my first disappointments of the 'romans durs' by Simenon. Partly, this was due to the sloppy translation. But also, I just did not think the Franck character was believable at all.

Ik vertaalde onlangs dit citaat uit 'Nature and Man's Fate' (1965) van de Amerikaanse ecologist Garrett Hardin (1915 – 2003) op mijn tijdslijn.
"In de dagen vóór Pasteur werd de wereldbevolking van generatie op generatie min of meer op peil gehouden door een cybernetisch systeem waarin het belangrijkste feedbackelement aan de bovengrens ziekte was. Hardin wordt gerekend tot de ecofascisten.
Recentelijk stierf de Finse denker Pentti Linkola (1932 – 2020) een tweede spilfiguur uit het ecofascisme. Die liet in 1994 in een interview met het WSJ optekenen:

RIP Shusei Nagaoka (1936 – 2015)
Shusei Nagaoka was a Japanese illustrator known for his music album cover art in the 1970s and 1980s. Artists for whom he illustrated covers include Electric Light Orchestra, Earth, Wind & Fire, Deep Purple, Space, Maze, George Clinton, Kitaro, Rose Royce, Caldera, Giorgio Moroder and the robots of Munich Machine.
His style was similar to that of sexy robot designer Hajime Sorayama (born 1947).

André Stordeur was a Belgian musician.
To be honest, I'd never heard of Stordeur.

RIP Hal Willner (1956 – 2020)
Hal Willner was an American music producer and facilitator.
In my book Willner is primarily noted for his album Dead City Radio (1990), a spoken word album of William S. Burroughs recitations.
I do not know if it was Gus Van Sant's video "A Thanksgiving Prayer" (1991) or his film Drugstore Cowboy (1989) which visually introduced me to Burroughs.
Today, I learn that "A Thanksgiving Prayer" was a promotional video to Dead City Radio.
In the documentary Words of Advice: William S. Burroughs on the Road (2007) there is an interview with Willner on the making of Dead City Radio at 1:07:40 and the recording of of a "Thanksgiving Prayer" is at 1:11:23, sadly without the Gus Van Sant footage.
I wonder if there is any overlap between Born Bad series and Popcorn music
