Over 'Parasite' en 'Joker'.
Ik zag de Zuid-Koreaanse film 'Parasite'.
Werkelijk een zeer geestige film, maar op het moment van de apotheose (de dramatische climax tijdens het verjaardagsfeestje in de tuin), waren ze me een beetje kwijt. Het bleek vanaf toen ook moeilijk mijn weg terug te vinden.
'Parasite' heeft nog een aantal andere gebreken. Zo stoorde het me dat een verzameling van vier uiterst getalenteerde en slimme mensen, arm zou zijn. In het echte leven hadden die vier al lang een comfortabel leventje gehad. In die zin vervalt heel de politieke boodschap van 'Parasite' in het niets.
Ook de muziek van 'Parasite' vind ik maar matig.
'Joker' dan.
'Joker' is gewoon andere koek. Die film was artistiek, politiek, acteertechnisch en muzikaal het beste wat 2019 te bieden had. Naarmate die film vorderde, werd hij beter en beter. De apotheose was een grote zalige adrenaline-rush.
Dus ja, de beste film van 2019?
'Joker' of course.
Er was niet echt competitie.
Voor zij die in 'Parasite' een kritiek op het kapitalisme zagen heb ik nog de parabel van de Mandarijn.
Stel, je kan een Mandarijn (in de 19de eeuw, toen deze parabel het licht zag, duidde men Chinezen met de term Mandarijnen aan) aan de andere kant van de wereld door een eenvoudige druk op een knop vermoorden. Door die moord word jij immens rijk. Bovendien zal niemand je ooit op die moord kunnen betrappen, het is de facto de perfecte misdaad en jij blijft sowieso ongestraft. Zou jij op de knop duwen? Zou jij dat soort geweld plegen? Zou jij dat met je geweten kunnen verenigen?
Tot zover heeft deze parabel weinig met jou te maken.
Maar in 1925 wees de Franse filosoof Émile Chartier erop dat elk van ons voortdurend op de knop duwt. “Elk van ons, vermoordt voortdurend de Mandarijn. De samenleving is een fantastische machine die keurige burgers in staat stelt wreed te zijn zonder dat ze het beseffen.” In de tijd van Chartier ging het dan over de fooien voor taxichauffers, spoorwegportiers en kelners. Als we verzuimen hen een fooi te geven, of we geven hen slechts een aalmoes, sussen we ons geweten met de gedachte dat de spoorwegmaatschappij, de uitbater van het taxibedrijf of de cafébaas hen vast op afdoende wijze in hun levensonderhoud voorziet.
Men kan stellen dat in de tijd van Chartier het probleem van de vermoorde Mandarijn metaforisch was. Vandaag is dat probleem nijpender en speelt het zich haast letterlijk af. Iedereen die in 'het systeem' zit, in de mythe van Europa, in de mythe van het rijke Westen, vermoordt voortdurend zijn Mandarijn.
Iedereen heeft zo goed als letterlijk bloed aan zijn handen. Bloed aan zijn handen bij het kopen van een gsm, bloed van de kinderen die in de kobaltmijnen werken en allicht jong zullen sterven wegens hun erbarmelijke arbeidsomstandigheden.
Er kleeft bloed aan ieders handen van de bloeddiamanten die door dezelfde kinderen gewonnen worden.
Ieder mishandelt en misbedeelt de moderne slaven die in lageloonlanden in sweatshops onder mensonterende omstandigheden voor Primark en H&M onze wegwerpconfectiekleding maken.
Ieder heeft bloed in zijn mond bij het eten van plofkippen en hormonenrunderen en ieder heeft bloed aan zijn handen bij elk plastic zakje dat hij achteloos in de supermarkt mee naar huis neemt.
Ziehier de mythe van ons goede leven.
I am writing a review of The Madness of Crowds and as is so often the case, I get sidetracked quite easily.
One way to deal with this sidetracking is my encyclopedia, which allows me to store every single brainfart quite easily. No fart is lost.
Now in Murray's book, there is a chapter on women which mentions the "Women Mean Business" conference. Murray is present and he witnesses young, smart, attractive women.
This started a digression into the power of women wich made me watch A Fool There Was (1915) wich made me research The Vampire painting by Jones and its accompanying poem by Kipling.

I first learned of P-Orridge in the late 1980s during the acid house period. I remember some of their Psychic TV material but can't seem to find the tracks that I heard at the time.
RIP Vittorio Gregotti (1927 – 2020)
And the first covid-19 victims start to come in.
Vittorio Gregotti was an Italian architect. He contributed the essay "Kitsch and Architecture" to Kitsch: The World of Bad Taste (1968) by Gillo Dorfles.
While the essay references Googie architecture and the kitsch of the roadside attraction, it fails to cite God's Own Junkyard (1964).
It also fails to foreshadow the positive view of kitsch in Learning from Las Vegas (1972).
RIP Michael de Benedictus (1951 - 2019)
This happened on October 17, 2019, but I only found out yesterday.
Michael de Benedictus was a founding member of the Peech Boys who made one album Life Is Something Special (1983).
He was part of the New York dance music scene centered around two discotheques: the Paradise Garage and the Loft (I leave out Studio 54 on purpose).
I believe I told this story before, but for many years I hunted Antwerp flea markets for vinyl which was played by Larry Levan at the New York discotheque Paradise Garage. I was assisted by list of records I had found in 1996. A list of records played at the Paradise Garage by Larry Levan. I printed it and tried to learn the names by heart.
I was at that time already fan of house music but now I found the antecedents of that kind of hedonistic nightlife music. I gradually found out more, what labels to buy (Salsoul, West End, Prelude), which producers to focus on (Patrick Adams) and which artists to follow (Arthur Russell).
Where had this fascination with dance music come from?
I remember when I was in my early twenties, walking along the Meir, hearing "Rotation" by Herb Alperts, and being intrigued by this music which could not be heard on the radio.
Michael de Benedictus role in that world was short and modest but large enough for me to document his legacy during a couple of hours of a lost coronavirus afternoon.

Industrial genocide was as marginal as it was stupid, immoral and insane. Although at some point, the majority of a couple of societies accepted it, and many embraced it. What really worked was as simple as it is timeless: Famine.
True Salvation was in birth control, much more than in nuclear terror. But Growth remained Holy and Immaculate. We run out of planets (well, there is only one that can have us) and Growth still is Holy and Immaculate. But we're not religious fanatics. Oh no.
A virus is a micro xerox inside a drop of fat full of hacking keys. It finds a way to get into cells, dressed up like Santa with a hacked password, and then it duplicates itself on stolen RNA. It can use some hide and seek tricks to get more copies out by misleading the antibody mechanisms that can counter it. But it still is extremely stupid and has no reason to exist. Other than acting as a natural bio weapon on behalf of a symbiotic mega system, to deal with disorderly proliferations of a species.
Like ours.
Nature doesn't care about pensions. Or Trump or Chinaman. It cares about the damage done to the total network of planetary life, by demography and footprints of out of control species. And it has some very effective mechanisms to correct threatening unbalances. Viruses are only one of them. Life wouldn't have become so complex and intricate and robust through versatility without having these spontaneous control mechanisms. Dinos got mono-cultural and dominant, and dinos went down the drain. No matter how smart or how strong dinos thought dinos were.
Ebola erupts in overpopulations on the brink of spontaneous genocide, and SARS and SARS2 break through in a place where growth pressure has become a 7% frenzy. That is neither a coincidence nor an evil plot. Humans create the weaknesses that viruses can exploit, exactly as they are meant to do.
This is a universal lesson in Growth. One of many.

Charles Wuorinen was an American composer.
He is best-known for his electronic piece Time's Encomium (1969).

Mal Sharpe was an American humorist.
His most notable work was done as part of the duo Coyle and Sharpe who were active as street interviewers in the early 1960s.
They were hilarious. The filmed sequence of "The Warbler" is magnificent. However, it appears to be offline at the moment.

Hallo Alona Lyubayeva ... het doet me erg deugd dat je het voor la Doornaert opneemt. Ze is zowat de excuustruus op rechts geworden van de ooit rechtse krant De Standaard.
Doornaert noemde die prijsuitreiking een "pure provocatie." Mevrouw Herremans is, anders dan Ludo Abicht waar ze vaak mee samenwerkt, niet onbesproken.
Allereerst is er de Israëlische lobby die het feit dat mevrouw Herremans die prijs daar zou ontvangen zo omschreef:

Maar je heb ook onafhankelijkere bronnen. Zo zegt Ralph Bisschops over het nawoord dat Herremans schreef voor het boek 'Een geschiedenis van het antisemitisme' van Ludo Abicht:
- "Het boek bevat een bewogen, polemisch en vlijmscherp geschreven nawoord door Brigitte Herremans. Het staat wel haaks op de afgewogen houding van Ludo Abicht. Brigitte Herremans vereenzelvigt zich met BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) en is een antizionistische hardliner, hetgeen Abicht niet is. Dus terughoudendheid vanuit de Joodse gemeenschap lijkt mij terecht. De timing (een uur op voorhand) belachelijk.

Emil Lendof/The Daily Beast
An anthropology article from 1956 used to get around more than it does now, “Body Ritual Among the Nacirema.” Because my mother gave it to me to read when I was 13, of course what I remember most from it is that among the Nacirema, women with especially large breasts get paid to travel and display them. Nacirema was “American” spelled backwards—get it?—and the idea was to show how revealing, and even peculiar, our society is if described from a clinical distance.
Dit ga ik vanavond kijken: Hi Mom!
In de jaren negentig schuimde ik de Antwerpse videotheken af op zoek naar filmparels. Ik had het boek Cult Movie Stars (1991) van cover tot cover gelezen en wou andere cinema, cinema die nooit op teevee zou komen, cinema die ik niet in het Filmhuis noch in Cartoons zou kunnen zien. Ik ging op zoek naar de films uit dat boek. Vooral Roger Corman had mijn aandacht getrokken.
Ik zag in die periode redelijk wat van zijn films. De covers van die videocasettes waren een wereld op zich, met nieuwe lettertypes en luide kleuren.
Typisch Thomas Goorden, die is zijn eigen autoriteit. Enkele uitspraken hem op de wall van Bieke Purnelle na de uitspraken van Sven Mary over vrouwelijke advocaten op zijn kantoor.

Max von Sydow was a Swedish-born actor famous for playing chess with death in the film The Seventh Seal (1957).
In my book, he has a minor role in Death Watch (1980) a film which caught my attention at a young age. It tells the story of a woman with an incurable disease who will be filmed 24/7 until hear death.

Speaking of reality television. The most underrated film with reality television as a trope is Paul Bartel's The Secret Cinema (1968).

Via die woorden (voordeur, achterdeur, islam, christendom) vind ik:

Christendom 1.0 is het Nieuwe Testament, Christendom 2.0 is de Quran.
2.0 is veel gevaarlijker op twee vlakken. Als je geloof bekijkt als een virus, dan is de islam veel krachtiger om zich als meme te verspreiden. Het is veel aantrekkelijker, het idee van de Koran als goddelijke boodschap opgetekend door een analfabeet.
Ten tweede gevaarlijker als gedachtegoed omdat het christendom het verschil kende tussen goddelijke en wereldlijke wetten, een onderscheid dat bij de islam niet meer gemaakt wordt, alles is ondergeschikt aan de sharia.

José Mojica Marins was a Brazilian film director, best-known for his persona "Coffin Joe".
I just finished watching and it's actually quite good. I especially like the atheist bits, his materialist world view, his Nietzschean take on things.
He eats meat on Holy Friday, just to taunt his catholic fellow townspeople.
It makes you wonder how this went down in Brasil. After all, it was 1964, another four years for 1968 to happen ... and did that even 'happen' in Brasil?

RIP Flavio Bucci (1947 – 2020)
Flavio Bucci was an Italian actor known in my canon for his tiny part in the metafilm Closed Circuit.
I wrote about that film here.
In that film Flavio Bucci sports thick glasses and plays the part of a sociologist who takes notes of the audience's reactions during the screening of the film. Afterwards he is interrogated by the police. Has he seen anything.

Andrew Weatherall was an English DJ, record producer, and remixer.
There was a time when music research took up most of my time. It coincided with the golden age of the music compilation, roughly from 1990 to 2005.
From that era stem Nine O'Clock Drop (2000) and Fabric 19 (2004).
Andrew Weatherall is also the man who made me discover "Black But Sweet" (1931) via his "Wilmot" composition.
