- the process of the formation and growth of cities
- the change in a country or region when its population migrates from rural to urban areas
- the proportion of a region's population that live in towns and cities; the rate at which this proportion is growing
Urbanization (or urbanisation) is the increase in the population of cities in proportion to the region's rural population. Urbanization is studied in terms of its effects on the ecology and economy of a region, see urban sociology.
