"Nullum magnum ingenium sine mixtura dementiae fuit" (There is no great genius without some touch of madness) is a Latin dictum most often attributed to Seneca the Younger and found in De Tranquillitate Animi. The ultimate source most often cited for this dictum is Aristotle with this thought expressed in Problemata xxx. 1: "why is it that all those who have become eminent in philosophy or politics or poetry or the arts are clearly melancholic?."
