"The Unnatural Mother" is a story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

"Esther Greenwood sacrificed her life and the life of her child to save 1500 other people. The dam was about to burst, so she sent a warning to the three villages that would have experienced casualties. Esther's child survived but the other mothers consider her "negligence" now a burden since they ended up raising her child."[1]
