When I first found out about Roger Scruton in 2008 I was a different man with different interests. I was, at the time, outraged by his cultural pessimism.

I changed from being an advocate of the cult of ugliness (although my interest in the ugly still remains strong) to an advocate of the cult of beauty.

And I also changed by way of a growing interest in the clash of civilizations in the aftermath of 9/11. A decisive moment in this evolution was the Charlie Hebdo massacre. We live in a different world now, a world in which freedom of expression is not absolute anymore. I'm talking specifically of the freedom to blaspheme in the way so vividly expressed by Marquis de Sade in his pamphlet Yet Another Effort, Frenchmen, If You Would Become Republicans (1795):

"I should like there to be perfect freedom to deride them all [all religions]; I should like men, gathered in no matter what temple to invoke the eternal who wears their image, to be seen as so many comedians in a theater, at whose antics everyone may go to laugh."

Today, everyone of us in the whole world is living under the blasphemy law that prohibits the depiction of Mohammed. Just think about how weird that is.

Philosophers such as Scruton were outraged by this and he spoke many times on the subject, suffering severe consequences for what he said.

Let me cite Scruton from two texts, both cited in Roger Scruton: The Philosopher on Dover Beach by Mark Dooley.

The first:

"The term "Islamofascism" was introduced by the French writer Maxine Rodinson (1915-2004) to describe the Iranian Revolution of 1978. Rodinson was a Marxist, who described as "fascist" any movement of which he disapproved. But we should be grateful to him for coining a word that enables people on the left to denounce our common enemy. After all, other French leftists--Michel Foucault, for example--had welcomed the revolution as an amusing threat to Western interests. It is only now that people on the left can acknowledge that they are just as much a target as the rest of us, in a war that has global chaos as its goal."

"Religious Freedom in America" (2006):

"In September of this past year Robert Redeker, a French schoolteacher, published an article in Le Figaro arguing that Christians, when incited to violence in the name of their religion, can find no authority for this in the life and words of Christ as recorded in the Gospel, while Muslims, incited to violence in the name of their religion, can find plenty of support for their belligerence in the Koran. Although manifestly true, this statement was found to be offensive by a section of Muslim opinion, Mr. Redeker received credible death-threats against himself and his family, and he and they now live in hiding under police protection."
"The reaction of the French authorities typifies the European response. Critics of Islam are not defended, but marginalized, by removing them from society and keeping them under house arrest. Instead of going after those who threatened Mr. Redeker with every weapon available to the law, instead of passing legislation of whatever severity might be required to restore the freedoms that have been gratuitously removed by the newcomers, the European authorities try to bluff their way to peace through appeasement, while pushing Islam’s critics off the stage. It is now increasingly rare for public discussion of Islam and its stance to proceed with the open-minded concern for truth that is necessary if the discussion is to get us anywhere.
"Europe has seen private enterprise censorship of the Islamist kind before: notably when the Fascists worked to take power in Italy and the Nazis in Germany. But Europe has not learned the lesson. People living under secular government, and enjoying the comforts of a modern economy, easily become blind to the deep religious need of our species. They readily assume that religious passions can be quelled by a dose of Enlightenment, and that a sprinkling of skepticism will suffice to quell those perverted passions, like Nazism and fascism, that arise in religion’s place. And when the truth suddenly displays itself, they stare aghast, utter abject apologies, and quickly retreat from the field."

We still do not see eye to eye on the subject of sex. I consider myself a pornographer and Scruton has written many things about sex I don't agree with.

On pornography he wrote:

"The pornographic image is like a magic wand that turns subjects into objects, people into things—and thereby disenchants them, destroying the source of their beauty."--Beauty (2009)

This is perhaps true but it also happens to be my favorite way of having sex.

And this is probably one of the stupidest things he ever wrote:

"Consider the woman who plays with her clitoris during the act of coition. Such a person affronts her lover with the obscene display of her body, and, in perceiving her thus, the lover perceives his own irrelevance. She becomes disgusting to him, and his desire may be extinguished. The woman’s desire is satisfied at the expense of her lover’s, and no real union can be achieved between them."--Sexual Desire: A Philosophical Investigation

Would he understand that I revel in "the obscene display of her body", her "disgustingness"?

In deze uitgave zijn satirische verhalen en kronieken van Buysse bijeengebracht die na de eerste publicatie in Nederlandse tijdschriften nooit zijn herdrukt. De meesterlijke novelle 'Monsieur Hardamour' is een satirische thriller uit 1899. Ook de kortere verhalen en kronieken uit de jaren 1910 en 1920 behoren tot het meest genietbare in de Nederlandstalige literatuur uit het begin van de twintigste eeuw.

RIP Elizabeth 'Prozac Nation' Wurtzel (1967 – 2020)

Elizabeth Wurtzel was an American writer, best known for her novel Prozac Nation (1994).


The first lines of that novel read:

"I start to get the feeling that something is really wrong. Like all the drugs put together-the lithium, the Prozac, the desipramine, and Desyrel that I take to sleep at night-can no longer combat whatever it is that was wrong with me in the first place. I went there with F. This was our schedule.

I took some photos with my phone at the Musée Fabre.

I was particularly pleased at finding the original from a print I'd known from the third volume of the Illustrierte Sittengeschichte, an engraving of a monk holding a naked woman. In that book, the print was known as The indecent monk.

In the museum it was Claude Frollo et la Esmeralda by the French painter Narcisse Virgilio Díaz.

John Baldessari was an American artist.

Weggegooide stukken bij schrijven van Betekenis als gebruik: het geval muziek


De zoektocht naar betekenis is een van de meest fundamentele van het leven en bij uitbreiding van de filosofie. Wie zijn we? Wat doen we hier? Waarom zijn we hier? Die vragen behoren tot de meest gestelde filosofische vragen. De ‘meaning of life’ is er de meest prangende van. Betekenis heeft verschillende betekenissen. Als ik vraag, wat betekent dat, kan het antwoord zijn, met wat stemt dat overeen, de zogenaamde correspondentietheorie. Maar de vraag kan ook betekenen, “wat is het nut van dan dit?”. Taal heeft betekenis en nut. Het verwijst naar de werkelijkheid en het is nuttig vanuit darwinistisch perspectief.

Deze paper verkent het snijvlak van een aantal concepten in relatie tot muziek: betekenis, taal, gebruik en evolutie.

Betekenis is gebruik, zei Wittgenstein. Ik maak een zijsprong. Al een tijdje denk ik na over teleologie. Over doelgerichtheid en meer bepaald het ontbreken ervan. Tegelijkertijd dacht ik veel na over darwinisme en waarom dat op zo weinig plaatsen in de filosofie aan bod kwam. Zelfs niet bij de cursus van Erik Myin over ‘radical enactivism’, dat een haast darwinistisch perspectief biedt op ‘basic minds without content’ vermeldde Darwin niet. In dat opzicht vond ik een opzienbarend boek van Peter Munz: Philosophical Darwinism.


In de opleiding zei iemand “Mijn man kan geen muziek lezen, ik vind het altijd heel vreemd als iemand geen noten kan lezen”.” Je zou voor minder tot de slotsom komen dat muziek een echte taal is als in de zin “Ik spreek Nederlands, Frans, Engels en muziek.”

Muziek heeft misschien geen betekenis, noch nut. Over de betekenis van muziek wordt sinds Hanslick gediscussieerd. Over het nut sinds Pinker het een nutteloos bijverschijnsel van het menselijke taalvermogen noemde vanuit darwinistische perspectief: Muziek dus nutteloos.

His magnum opus Lanark (1981) features a skin disease called 'dragonhide'.

Adjectives applicable to this work are grotesque, fantastique and rabelaisian.

The book has a tendency to depress.

Democratie leidt tot consumentisme

Dus de stelling werkt maar een is een mogelijk tegenvoorbeeld.

Optie 1: één voorbeeld is niet statistisch relevant genoeg om een politiek economisch mechanisme naar de prullenbak te verwijzen. Het gaat hier namelijk niet over een absoluut mechanisme als de zwaartekracht, maar over probabiliteit.

optie 2: de Chinese overheid heeft een lange traditie van autoritaire vaderlijkheid vervat in het confucianisme. Ze zijn ook gekend voor hun lange termijn denken. Het is ook een cultuur van filosoferen en elitair denken. Dus: de Chinese heersende klasse ziet dat de heersende klasse in het westen machtiger is dan zij en dat dit voortspruit uit economische dominantie. Die dominantie komt dat weer voort uit het kapitalistische model van eeuwige groei gestoeld op het multipliereffect (een economische wetmatigheid die stelt dat als er in de economische ketting iets beweegt dat dan alles beweegt. Bvb investeringen 'versnellen' consumptie). Dit multipliereffect was de grote 'economische fout' in het model van Karel Marx. Hij had hier namelijk geen rekening mee gehouden. Hij ging ervan uit dat de rijken rijker zouden worden en de armen armer, maar dat klopt niet in een kapitalistisch systeem. De arbeiders worden samen met het patronaat rijker. Dat is fundamenteel. Want daarom is het ook zo dat de rijken om nog rijker te worden ook de 'armen' rijker moeten maken. Dat is de eerste reden om te switchen van economisch model. Maar dit houdt risico's in want deze rijkdom voor de armen werkt emanciperend. De laatste decennia is hierin langzaam verandering gekomen. We merken dat consumptie in eerste instantie emanciperend werkt, maar overconsumptie werkt net verlammend het verslimt niet het verdomt. En de tweede reden dat dit niet emanciperend werkt is dat door de huidige technologie consumptie net zeer veel mogelijkheden inhoud om je bevolking te controleren. (monitoring van smartphones, big data, ...) Het wordt dus voor autoritaire regimes interessant om hun bevolking niet langer onder controle te houden door kunstmatige armoede maar door rijkdom. Dit is de tweede reden om te switchen van economisch model.

Dus: historisch is het zo dat democratie en (over)consumptie hand in hand zijn ontstaan. Maar nu we overconsumptie en zijn gevolgen leren kennen, merken we dat overconsumptie een nieuw soort autoritair regime uitlokt. (jij had toch ook 'the trap' gezien op youtube?)

Peter Wollen was a British film theorist, filmmaker. and political journalist.

He is best-known for his book Signs and Meaning in the Cinema (1969), his marriage to an collaboration with Laura "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" Mulvey.

RIP Claudine 'bond girl' Auger (1941 – 2019)

Claudine Auger was a French actress. I do not think she is related to Brian Auger.

Auger will be remembered as a bond girl but in my universe, she is the mother in Exploits of a Young Don Juan (1986), Isolina in Yo Yo (1965), the "thief!" shouter in Terrain Vague (1960) and Renata in Twitch of the Death Nerve (1971).
