Yesterday 14/3/19 I watched Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles (2018) at CinemaZuid.

The film is interesting for its details on the 'making-of' of Land Without Bread (1933).

It reveals how Buñuel staged several scenes of his documentary: killing a donkey to be 'eaten' alive by bees and killing a goat to be eaten by the locals who would otherwise never eat meat.

While showing a dwarf in the style (or maybe it is that same dwarf) as depicted in fig. 44 of Las Jurdes : Étude de géographie humaine (1927), the book that was the inspiration for the film, the narrator says:

"Dwarfs and morons are very common in the upper Hurdanos mountains. Their families employ them as goat herders if they’re not too dangerous. The terrible impoverishment of this race is due to the lack of hygiene, undernourishment and constant intermarriage. The smallest one of these creatures is 28 years old. Words cannot express the horror of their mirthless grins as they play a sort of hide and go seek."

Another scene shows a sickly and very thin girl lying in the street:

"In a deserted street, we come across this child. Our guide tells us that she has been lying there for the last three days ... but no one seems to know what her ailment is. One of our companions examines her. The child's throat and tonsils are terribly inflamed. But unfortunately, we could do nothing about it. Malady and infestation is their lot. Two days later, they told us that the child had died."

After watching the whole Land Without Bread film, I got the impression that Buñuel wanted to go for a lost tribe effect, since the opening title card reads:

“The Hurdanos were unknown, even in Spain, until a road was built for the first time in 1922. Nowhere does man need to wage a more desperate fight against the hostile forces of nature.”

And a little bit further, when showing a baby covered in trinkets:

"Though actually Christian, these trinkets are amazingly like the charms of African natives."

On the Hurdanos walking barefoot:

"Shoes are a rare luxury and the roads are cruel to naked feet."

Graham Greene, in a review of the movie for Night and Day magazine, called it “an honest and hideous picture.”

And ugly it is.

Land Without Bread is reminiscent of Misère au Borinage (1934), both are political films in the tradition of the cult of ugliness which can be traced to The Potato Eaters (1885).

Ik lees op het moment 'Grays anatomie' van John Gray (niet het geneeskundeboek dus).

Het is een bijzonder boeiende verzameling essays over de recente politieke geschiedenis.

Het citaat over hoeden las ik in het essay "Alweer het einde van de geschiedenis?", Grays commentaar op Fukuyama's voorspelling dat het liberaal kapitalisme (en ergo ook de redelijkheid) de wereld had veroverd. Het citaat zélf is van de Engelse conservatieve filosoof Michael Oakeshott, uit zijn stuk "On being conservative" (1956).

Gray is een conservatieve filosoof die vaak pessimistisch genoemd wordt. Hij geloof niet dat morele vooruitgang bestaat en evenmin dat de rede de nieuwe heilsleer kan zijn, ervan uitgaande dat we voor hetzelfde geld maar een paar stappen verwijderd zijn van een nieuwe barbarij. Dat klinkt misschien onheilspellend maar ik vind het realistischer dan het ongefundeerde vooruitgangsdenken van zeg maar Maarten Boudry in de Lage Landen en zijn leermeester Steven Pinker in De Verenigde Staten.

Want wat de toekomst wordt, blijft koffiedik kijken. Vooral het vieren van het menselijk vernuft in de groene kwestie vind ik erg kortzichtig.

Enfin, ik ga een beetje verder lezen.

P. S. : Tot mijn schande heb ik me laten vangen door Grays stuk "Martelen, een gematigd voorstel" ("Torture: a modest proposal"). Erg dom :).

Om bij het onderwerp te blijven: De essentie van The Righteous Mind voor mij is dat linkse mensen, bij wijze van spreken. moreel gehandicapt zijn. Dit is mogelijks ietwat te grof uitgedrukt.

Dit was een revelatie vor mij. Ik dacht tot dan nl. net het tegenovergestelde.

Van de zes basisblokken 'care, fairness, liberty, loyalty, authority, purity' gebruiken linkse mensen vnl. het eerste en meer uitgebreid de eerste drie. De laatste drie, die essentieel zijn om een gebalanceerde mening te vormen over morele zaken, gebruiken zij niet of nauwelijks.

Dit heeft significante implicaties voor de politiek. Haidt, zelf een liberaal (in de Amerikaanse zin van het woord), was met deze vaststelling niet erg blij in eerste instantie. Maar het heeft hem wel doen beseffen dan een goed (politiek) bestuur enkel mogelijk is als er voldoende evenwicht is tussen links en rechts.

Hoeveel politici beseffen dit, denk je? Volgens mij weinig. Zowel ter linker als ter rechterzijde. Maar vooral ter linker omdat zij nog veel meer overtuigd zijn van hun moreel gelijk.

Haidt heeft zelf toegegeven dat linkse mensen zich bepaalde zaken die rechtse mensen denken en voelen absoluut niet kunnen inbeelden. Logisch want ze hebben geen of veel te weinig voeling met de drie laatste morele waarden uit het rijtje, nl. 'loyalty, authority, and purity'.

Rechtse mensen kunnen zich de standpunten van linkse mensen vaak wel inbeelden. Vandaar dat rechtsen eerder geneigd zullen zijn om eens toe te geven dan linksen in bepaalde morele situaties.

Haidt besefte dat rechtse mensen noodzakelijk zijn voor een goed (politiek) bestuur.

Mede daardoor is hij enige tijd later Heterodox Academy begonnen, waar ondertussen meer dan 2.500 academici zich bij hebben aangesloten.

Dit besef/inzicht is in onze contreien ook hard nodig. Want ook in onze universiteiten zijn de menswetenschappelijke richtingen overwegend links geworden. Idem voor de media, als je het mij vraagt.

RIP Hal Blaine (1929 – 2019)

Hal Blaine was an American drummer.

Some of the more notable records he played on include the Ronettes' single "Be My Baby" (1963) and the Beach Boys' album Pet Sounds (1966).

Of his solo work, Psychedelic Percussion (1967) is of note.

Raymond Donnez, known as Don Ray was a French musician and producer of some note in the Euro disco scene.

He contributed to Cerrone's records but also released one solo album which enjoys cult status, The Garden of Love (1978), which featured the successful single "Standing in the Rain".

Ik neem ook afstand van de mening in het artikel hieronder dat stelt dat je op Aalst carnaval niet kan lachen met de islam want volgens betrouwbare bron wordt ook met hen gelachen.

Met de bange blanke man à la Homer Simpson, de luiwammige Onslow in 'Keeping Up Appearances' (1990–95) en de pathetische Al Bundy in 'Married... with Children' (1987-97) wordt er vermoedelijk ook gelachen.

Voor de Tweede Kamerverkiezingen van maart 2017 was Engelen lijstduwer voor de Partij voor de Dieren. Engelen schreef verschillende boeken, onder andere: De schaduwelite voor en na de crisis en De kanarie in de kolenmijn (met Marianne Thieme).

RIP Carolee Schneemann (1939 – 2019)

Carolee Schneemann was an American artist known for her "body art". Her best-known piece is perhaps Interior Scroll in which she produced a scroll from her vagina.

Her films include Fuses (1967), a reaction to Stan Brakhage's Window Water Baby Moving (1959).

Above is are fragments of Fuses set to a narration made as a school or university assignment.

Despite the intense media focus on Muslims and their religion since the tragedy of 9/11, few Western scholars or policymakers today have a clear idea of the distinctions between Islam and the politically based fundamentalist movement known as Islamism. In this important and illuminating book, Bassam Tibi, a senior scholar of Islamic politics, provides a corrective to this dangerous gap in our understanding. He explores the true nature of contemporary Islamism and the essential ways in which it differs from the religious faith of Islam.

Drawing on research in twenty Islamic countries over three decades, Tibi describes Islamism as a political ideology based on a reinvented version of Islamic law. In separate chapters devoted to the major features of Islamism, he discusses the Islamist vision of state order, the centrality of antisemitism in Islamist ideology, Islamism's incompatibility with democracy, the reinvention of jihadism as terrorism, the invented tradition of shari'a law as constitutional order, and the Islamists' confusion of the concepts of authenticity and cultural purity. Keith Flint was an English vocalist and dancer associated with the electronic dance act The Prodigy.

Flint contributed to "Out of Space" (1992) which sampled the classic reggae track "Chase the Devil" (1976) by Max Romeo, which was produced by Lee Scratch Perry.
