Researching the Flemish fantastique and Flemish grotesque of my previous posts [1] [2], I found Le genre satirique: fantastique et licencieux dans la sculpture flamande et wallonne; les miséricordes de stalles (The Satirical Genre: the Fantastic and Licentious in Flemish and Walloon Sculpture: the Misericords and Stalls) by Louis Maeterlinck.

The book deals with licentious wood carvings in choir stalls and misericords and has an engraving of an example[3](above) at Basilique Saint-Materne de Walcourt.

Louis Maeterlinck, family of Maurice Maeterlinck, also wrote Le genre satirique dans la peinture flamande (The Satirical Genre in Flemish Painting), a book which features Olifant (gravure)[4], The Battle of the Money Bags and the Strong Boxes[5] and the allegorical landscape painting Met recht soudic gerne doer de Werelt commen.
