The September 11, 2001 attacks (often referred to as 9/11—pronounced "nine eleven") consisted of a series of coordinated terrorist suicide attacks by Islamic extremists on the United States of America on September 11, 2001. One year after 9/11, Verso Books published three controversial essays by leading continental philosophers Baudrillard, Virilio, and Zizek. Shortly after 9/11 the attacks have also been commented upon by contemporary artists Damien Hirst and Stockhausen.
