"Sans les femmes, le commencement de notre vie seroit privé de secours, le milieu de plaisirs, et la fin de consolation" is a dictum by French writer Victor-Joseph Étienne de Jouy and made famous by Schopenhauer in On Women.

It translates in English as "Without women, the beginning of our life would be helpless; the middle, devoid of pleasure; and the end, of consolation."

The dictum was first recorded in L'Hermite de la Chaussée d'Antin, ou observations sur les mœurs et les usages français au commencement du xixe siècle, a collection of writings by de Jouy.
