Sade in prison, Sade timeline, Vincennes

On July 15 or July 16 1778, on the return trip to Vincennes from Aix-en-Provence, Sade escapes from Inspector Marais at Valence and hides out in the neighbourhood of La Coste. In spite of his legal victory at Aix, he is still a prisoner of the King's virtue of the lettre de cachet of February 13, 1777. He returns to his castle on August 23.

He is arrested at 4:00 A.M. by Marais on August 26 and transported back to Vincennes.

Sade later described what happened in his "Story of My Imprisonment."
