Rester vivant (1991, English: Stay Alive: A Method) is an essay by Michel Houellebecq, composed of short texts on suffering, existence, philosophy and poetry. To Stay Alive: A Method (2016), a documentary film based on the essay starring Iggy Pop, was made in The Netherlands.

French description

Composé d'une série de textes courts sur les thèmes notamment de la souffrance et de la poésie, ce recueil est le premier texte personnel de l'auteur. Il paraît la même année que son étude sur H.P. Lovecraft.

Cet essai a fait l'objet de plusieurs rééditions. Il est actuellement disponible dans la collection Librio.

"De wereld is een zich ontplooiend lijden. Een kern van lijden ligt aan haar oorsprong. Elk bestaan is een expansie, en een verplettering. Alle dingen lijden, zozeer dat ze beginnen te zijn. Het niets trilt van pijn, zozeer dat het tot aanzijn komt: in een abject paroxisme."

The Dutch translation is titled "Leven, lijden, schrijven" and can be found in De koude revolutie.
