A beautiful film about recognition/forgetting. Lots of old-fashioned clouds of cigarette smoke, lyrical dialogues, interesting soundtrack (Thomas Knak), reminiscent of Gilles Mimouni’s 1996 L’Appartement and Soderbergh’s Out of Sight. Many more comparisons have been drawn for this film; Lynch, Bergman, von Trier, Hitchcock, Robbe-Grillet, Vonnegut and Kafka. The film was inspired by a Jacques-Henri Lartigue photograph of a woman standing in a room with empty bookcases. Cinematography by Manuel Alberto Claro. Reconstruction is the 2003 Danish debut feature film directed by Christoffer Boe. It is the story of a young man who thought himself already in love with a nice girl is drawn into a literary drama when he is captured by a deep and stimulating love affair. Late one evening, Alex suddenly abandons his girlfriend, Simone, to follow the beautiful Aimée. In his encounter with Aimée, time and place dissolve for him and he becomes a stranger to Simone, towards whom he cannot return. Both women are impeccably played by Maria Bonnevie.

Plot flaws (see suspension of disbelief): 2003 is the post-mobile phone era.

Plot structure: A kind of metafiction with August (the novelist and husband of Aimée) as omniscient narrator. The term magic realism kept popping into my head although my knowledge of that literary genre is very limited. The film feels like Russian Ark in certain aspects.
