Proto house music is the name given to "house music" avant la lettre, from the period 1982 - 1984. One aspect of the music was the "dub thing in disco" in records such as "Thanks to You" and "Don't Make Me Wait " (Shep Pettibone interviewed by Steven Harvey). This was the period before Frankie Knuckles moved to Chicago where he opened the Warehouse, before Trax Records was founded, during which there were already some New York labels and tracks that we might call proto house.
