In 1862, Ingres and 26 fellow artists (among which were Flandrin, Fleury-Richard, Nanteuil, Troyon, Bida, Isabey and Puvis de Chavannes) sign a petition, titled "Protestation des grands artistes contre toute assimilation de la photographie à l'art" ('Protest by great artists against any assimilation of photography to art'). Eugène Delacroix and Léon Cogniet do not sign the petition.
