The player piano is a self-playing piano, containing a pneumatic or eletro-mechanical mechanism that plays on the piano action pre-programmed music via perforated paper rolls. The rise of the player piano grew with the rise of the mass-produced piano in the house and the sheet music industry explosion of the late 19th and early 20th century. The advent of electrical amplification in home music reproduction via the gramophone and wireless in the mid 1920s caused the eventual decline in popularity.
