Ingres on the salon of 1834 supposedly said “It stifles and corrupts the feeling for the great, the beautiful; artists are driven to exhibit thereby… the desire to get themselves noticed at any price. Thus, the salon is literally no more than a picture shop, a bazaar in which business rules instead of art.”

The Execution of Lady Jane Grey by Paul Delaroche was the star of the Paris Salon of 1834. Much to the discontent of Ingres, who received little attention for his Le Martyre de saint Symphorien.
