"Ob pulchritudinem et recordationem" is a phrase from De cultu imaginum by Jonas of Orléans.
It is often cited in the context of the origins of painting in a formulation by Toussaint-Bernard Émeric-David as "instruire le peuple, embellir le monument" and its English translation "to instruct the people, and to decorate the buildings".
