"Freud also systematically avoided using cinema and photography as analogies for the psyche in favor of other, optical but nonphotographic technologies [...] As we have seen, in 1925 Freud insisted upon using the Mystic Writing-Pad, a fairly antiquated technology, as an analogy for memory."--The Emergence of Cinematic Time (2002) by Mary Ann Doane

The Printator, known in German language as “Wunderblock” is a writing pad invented in the 1920s. It was described by Sigmund Freud in his essay “A Note upon the 'Mystic Writing-Pad'” (1925).

Translation from the Danish Wikipedia:

An eternity block – which is also called a magic block , German : Wunderblock, French : bloc-note magique or ardoise magique – is a toy board on whose parchment sheet you can write an infinite number of times. The carbon paper behind sticks to the parchment when you write. The board is wiped clean by pulling a stick between the parchment and the carbon paper, which separates the layers again.
