In biology, a mutation is the alteration of the nucleotide sequence of the genome of an organism, virus, or extrachromosomal DNA.

Etymology
Late 14th century, from Latin mutationem, both directly and via Old French mutacion, form of Latin mūtō (“I move, I change, I vary”).[1]
