Musique pour les soupers du Roi Ubu

"[Musique pour les soupers du Roi Ubu] presents a massive, integrated collage of quotations. The list of sources is astonishing for its sheer variety: Bach, Beethoven, Berlioz, Bizet, Blacher, Dowland, Fortner, Frescobaldi, Honegger, Luther, Mussorgsky, Praetorius, Schubert, Stockhausen, Johann Strauss I, Stravinsky and Wagner. Such a concept could easily give birth to a work of no substance, a hodge-podge of musical ideas and idioms, but the melting-pot of Zimmermann's art has smelted these diverse elements into a coherent and unified compound."[1]
