Brazilian Beats

Mr Bongo Records is a Brighton based independent record label specialising in Brazilian music and world music. It was formed in 1989 by David 'Mr Bongo' Buttle.

Mr Bongo Records Shop was founded in 1989, in Berwick Street, London, later moving to Lexington Street and then finally to Poland Street. The shop was highly regarded as one of the best hip hop record stores in the world. The Mr Bongo record label is still strong 20 years after the first shop opened, and a film label, Mr Bongo Films, was set up in 2004 to release lost classics from around the world.

Disorient Records is a sub-label, specialising in dance music from Japan.

Mr Bongo Soundsystem

The Mr Bongo Soundsystem specialises in bringing the sound of Mr Bongo to dancefloors; all forms of South American, African and soulful music from around the world played in a unique, energetic way. They have traveled worldwide to Tokyo, New York, Ibiza, Brazil and much of mainland Europe amongst others, and guested at events at the Millenium Dome in London, MTV EMEA Parties in Portugal, New Year's Eve in China and more.

Mr Bongo Films

Mr Bongo Films is the latest Mr Bongo imprint and major long term project. In keeping with the record label’s philosophy Mr Bongo casts its net around the globe to find the best in cinema.

Taking in such world-renowned directors as Michelangelo Antonioni, Wojciech Has and Satajyit Ray and films such as the widely acclaimed The Saragossa Manuscript, a film that has been hugely influential on the likes of Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. Some other releases by Mr Bongo include Mikhail Kalatozov's I am Cuba (Soy Cuba), Glauber Rocha's Black God, White Devil and from the esteemed Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni's L'Avventura.

Mr Bongo plans and aims to build a diverse catalogue of impressive directing and acting talent and a selection of cinematic gems from around the world. Alongside releasing DVD titles,they look to develop theatrical releases taking in independent cinemas worldwide.
