"What is a cult film? A cult film is one that has a passionate following, but does not appeal to everybody. James Bond movies are not cult films, but chainsaw movies are. Just because a movie is a cult film does not automatically guarantee quality: some cult movies are very bad; others are very, very good. Some make an awful lot of money at the box office; others make no money at all. Some are considered quality films; others are exploitation." [...]

One thing cult movies do have in common is that they are all genre films - for example gangster films or westerns. They also have a tendency to slosh over from one genre into another, so that a science fiction film might also be a detective movie, or vice versa. They share common themes as well, themes that are found in all drama: love, murder and greed." --Alex Cox, in the first show of Moviedrome, 1988

Moviedrome was a BBC2 series where a cult movie was introduced before it was shown. Moviedrome first showed up in 1988 when director Alex Cox hosted the introductions. Cox hosted Moviedrome (shown every summer) until 1994. In 1997 the show returned with movies chosen and introduced by Mark Cousins, to less popular appeal.

In its first broadcast, Cox explained what cult films were to him (see inset).

Implied in his choice are also many one-hit wonders.

There were two paper publications of Moviedrome: Moviedrome: The Guide by Alex Cox and Nick Jones (London: BBC, 1990), and Moviedrome 2: The Guide (1993, London: BBC) also by Cox and Jones.
