Morfii is a short story by Mikhail Bulgakov first published in 1927. Sometimes included in the "Notes of a Young Doctor" collection, it takes as its subject a young doctor's morphine addiction. It is based on Bulgakov's own experience, the result of his treatment with morphine of a diphtheria infection. He managed to kick the habit when he returned to Kiev from the country. He also tried to kick his habit with cocaine but felt it was worse than morphine.
