Mercedes Sosa (July 9, 1935 - October 4, 2009) was an Argentine singer immensely popular throughout Latin America. With her roots in Argentine folk music, she became one of the preeminent exponents of nueva canción and she is known for songs such as "Alfonsina y el mar" (1969).
