Pornographic Art” (2001) is an essay by Matthew Kieran published in Philosophy and Literature, 25: 31–45.

Excerpt:

"Pornographic art" is an oxymoron. At best, pornographic representations can only be bad art and, at worst, they cannot be art at all. This is the received view. ("See, for example, Anthony Burgess, “What is Pornography?” and George Steiner, “Night Words: High Pornography and Human Privacy,” in Douglas A. Hughes, ed., Perspectives on Pornography (New York: St. Martin’s Press, 1970); Joel Feinberg, Offense to Others (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1985), chap. 11; Jerrold Levinson, “Erotic Art,” in Edward Craig, ed., The Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy (London: Routledge, 1999), pp. 406–9.")

In Contemplating Art (2006), Jerrold Levinson writes a chapter on erotic art, "Erotic Art and Pornographic Pictures", partly in response to a text by Matthew Kieran's text “Pornographic Art”.
