"The various modes of worship which prevailed in the Roman world were all considered by the people as equally true; by the philosophers as equally false; and by the magistrate as equally useful." --The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Edward Gibbon

"Proletarian violence, carried on as a pure and simple manifestation of the sentiment of class struggle, appears thus as a very fine and heroic thing; it is at the service of the immemorial interests of civilization; it is not perhaps the most appropriate method of obtaining immediate material advantages, but it may save the world from barbarism." p.85 Georges Sorel, Reflections on Violence (1908)

"Myth is filled with the most violent emotions and the most frightful visions." p.48, Ernst Cassirer, The Myth of the State

"Civilized man is, of course, subject to the most violent passions, and when these passions reach their culminating point he is liable to yield to the most irrational impulses. Yet even in this case he cannot entirely forget or deny the demand of rationality. In order to believe he must find some “reasons” for his belief; he must form a “theory” to justify his creeds. And this theory, at least, is not primitive; it is, on the contrary, highly sophisticated." p.280, ibid

“[…] all debate about the truth or falsity of a totalitarian dictator’s prediction is as weird as arguing with a potential murderer about whether his future victim is dead or alive – since by killing the person in question the murderer can promptly provide proof of the correctness of his statement […] Propaganda is marked by its extreme contempt for facts. […] The assertion that the Moscow subway is the only one in the world is a lie only so long as the Bolsheviks have not the power to destroy all the others.” --The Origins of Totalitarianism, Hannah Arendt

"Last night I dreamed about Freud. What does that mean?" --Stanisław Jerzy Lec

Masterseminarie Filosofie en samenleving Universiteit Antwerpen, 2017-18 is a seminar by Herbert De Vriese on political myth and propaganda.

Blurb:
