Below is a list of television shows that have been made up in real television shows or other media. Characters who work in television are interesting to viewers. An early example of the show within a show format was The Jack Benny Program which had been popular on radio and took the same format to the new medium of television.

  • Milky Way Mathletes - a rival children's program that Robin mentioned as trying to sue Space Teens for stealing their idea.

  • America Sings - a singing competition that is an obvious parody of American Idol, in which real-life former Idol runner-up David Archuleta was seen as a contestant and won the competition as a result of Carly and Sam urging viewers of their web show to vote for him in the competition
  • Celebrities Under Water - a "reality" game show where has-been celebrities see who can hold their breath underwater the longest.
  • iCarly - a television version of the real-life series' titular web show, which initially borrowed the format of Carly and Sam's web show (however with a house band, a la what is commonly used on a late night talk show) seen in the season one episode "iCarly Saves TV", but head of the network the series is sold to makes numerous changes such as the addition of a Barney the Dinasour-type character named Zeebo and the firing of Carly's co-host Sam (who is replaced by a prima donna child actress); Freddie and Carly both quit the show afterwards due to their dislike of the changes, and the show is retooled into a sitcom featuring Zeebo and the actress, with Carly, Sam and Freddie becoming legally able to do their show on the internet in its original form
  • Totally Terri - a sitcom that parodies iCarly airing on The Dingo Channel (likely a parody of Disney Channel, the rival of iCarly's parent network Nickelodeon), which caused Carly and Sam to go to the offices of Dingo Channel to get the writers of Totally Terri to stop stealing the material used on their web show; eventually using blackmail (threatening to disclose that the channel kept the frozen head of the company's founder in the building)

  • 60 - parody of 24, in which each episode is one second of a minute-long story

  • Off Duty Cop - A possible parody of Cops.

Lost

  • Exposé - An American crime show shot in Australia. Similar to VIP and Charlie's Angels. The show follows the adventures of two crime fighting strippers named Crystal and Autumn. Nikki Fernandez, who was on Oceanic 815 guest starred as fellow crime fighting stripper Corvette. In Nikki's final episode it is revealed that the girls mentor Mr LaShade, played by Billy Dee Williams, is also the shows main villain The Cobra. Expose is also shown in South Korea.

Mad

Married... with Children

  • Psycho Dad, a western-type series that Al Bundy is a fan of and was referenced to in several episodes, which prompts him and his "NO MA'AM" group to go to Washington to plead the FCC's case against the show's violent content after finding out that it was cancelled.
  • The New Adventures of Psycho Dad
  • Psycho Mom, a spinoff of Psycho Dad
  • You Can't Miss, a Dating Game-style show on which Bud appears. On the fictional game, the choosing bachelorette can go on a second date with the winning bachelor (in this case, Bud), or the show's residential hunk.
  • The Masculine Feminist, a talk show hosted by Jerry Springer, which Al Bundy and his group "NO MA'AM" take over during the show and bound and gag Springer to a chair.
  • Peas in a Pod - satire of "Married... with Children" itself; Kelly auditions for a sitcom role, and the producers base the series on her reminiscences of her family life. "Peas In a Pod" is canceled after 'some woman in Michigan' initiates a boycott against its sponsors, parodying a real life (but unsuccessful) boycott against "Married... with Children."

  • Chuckles the Clown - Locally produced children's show mentioned in several episodes. His death, when he is trampled by an elephant while wearing a "Peter Peanut" costume, was the basis for the episode Chuckles Bites the Dust.
  • WJM-TV Evening News – Minneapolis news show on which many of the main characters worked
  • The Happy Homemaker – Cooking show on WJM starring Sue Ann Nivens

  • The Captain Crocodile Show - Children's program spoofing Captain Kangaroo. (From the episode "Captain Crocodile"; oddly, this parallels Charles Nelson Reilly's later show Uncle Croc's Block.)
  • The Dr. Sisters Show - Psychiatric advice program (Hosted by Dr. Lorraine Sisters). From the episode "The Monkees Get Out More Dirt."
  • Frogman - The Monkees perform a fantasy sequence spoofing the 1960s series Batman in the episode "Captain Crocodile".
  • Monkees Shopping Land - Actually, a fictional TV network, spoofing The Home Shopping Network in their 1997 ABC-TV special Hey, Hey, It's the Monkees.
  • Ted Hack's Original Amateur Hour - Parody of Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour from the episode "Too Many Girls".
  • To Tell a Fib - The Monkees spoof the game show To Tell the Truth in the episode "Captain Crocodile".
