"La Conscience"[1] is a poem by Victor Hugo from La Légende des siècles.

In this poem, there is no peace for Cain, since he is pursued by the Eye of God. Even underground in a tomb, the eye is always there: "L'oeil était dans la tombe et regardait Cain" (The eye was in the tomb and kept looking at Cain).

The eye is mentioned in the following lines:

Et Caïn dit : « Cet œil me regarde toujours ! »
