la Repubblica (Italian for "The Republic") is the largest circulation Italian daily general-interest newspaper. It was founded in 1976 in Rome by Gruppo Editoriale L'Espresso led by Eugenio Scalfari and Carlo Caracciolo and Arnoldo Mondadori Editore. Born as a radical/socialist newspaper, it has since moderated to a centre-left political stance.
