During his life, Baudelaire intended to write an essay on the libertine novel Les Liaisons dangereuses and took notes for the essay. These notes were published in Baudelaire's L'Art Romantique. The notes feature the frequently quoted "La Révolution a été faite par des voluptueux" and "Les livres libertins commentent donc et expliquent la Révolution." The first phrase translates as "The Revolution was made by the voluptuous" and the second as "libertine books comment on and explain the Revolution".
