Regarding its title, the author noted:
- "Kunstwissenschaft is an old-fashioned German word denoting what we recognize today as the discipline of art history. A Kunstwissenschaftler is an art scholar, and Kunstwissenschaftlerin is the female version of the latter word. Although it is more common today to refer to art historians as Kunsthistoriker, I like the elemental tone of Kunstwissenschaft, which can literally be translated as “the science of art.”"
