Judith and Holofernes

Judith I by Gustav Klimt was painted in 1901. The Old Testament heroine who saved the city of Bethulia from the Assyrians is holding the head of Holofernes. Oil on canvas.

The painting is rectangular and vertically oriented, It show Judith frontally, and at the lower right hand corner, tucked away as it were, is the head of Holofernes. People who are not familiar with the story may not notice the head at all.
