"Intercourse with a woman is sometimes a satisfactory substitute for masturbation. But it takes a lot of imagination to make it work" (2 July 1907) is a dictum by Karl Kraus recorded in Die Fackel.
The original German read: "Der Koitus ist nur ein ungenügendes Surrogat für die Onanie!".
The dictum is cited in Freud's ""Civilized" Sexual Morality and Modern Nervous Illness".
