An infame was a person in Ancient Rome who had lost certain public rights for various reasons. Male and female prostitutes, pimps, actors and some types of gladiators were classified as infames. Romans did not want to stop the stage plays, gladiatorial fights, or prostitution but looked down on those who provided such entertainments.

Women could become infames if they committed adultery, and widows could become infames if they remarried too soon after their first husband's death.

The modern Roman Catholic Church has a similar concept of Infamy.
